Saturdays Are Fun: Fall in Love with the Yellow and Grey Trend
I love color. It’s most likely quite evident in my scrapbook pages. I am not afraid to mix and match colors at all. The yellow and gray color combo trend that started months ago fascinates me because yellow is one of my all-time favorite colors.
Are you in love with yellow and gray? Let’s look at the psychology of color as posted by Annie B. Bond at care2.com:
Yellow: The color of happiness, wisdom and imagination, Yellow is chosen by the mentally adventurous, searching for novelty and self-fulfillment. Yellow usually goes with a sunny and shrewd personality, with a good business head and a strong sense of humor. It is the color of intellectuality and all things to do with the mind. Yellow folks are usually clear and precise thinkers who have a good opinion of their own mental capacities and who have lofty ideals. They may at times tend to shun responsibility, preferring freedom of thought and action.
Gray: The color of caution and compromise, diligent Grays search for composure and peace and often work hard without reward. Older Grays like life to run on an even keel with few ups and downs. Young Grays may be withdrawing from life and suppressing their personalities. Grays often have good business ability and tend to work too much.

Art Jouraling 101 – Digital Gesso Textures in Action with Tutorial
Hello Friends! We have a new product to share with you, some new pages from the SBG Gallery, and a tutorial! After my post last week on Everything You Want to Know About Gesso, Tangie released a Digital Gesso Texture Set of 19 “painted” gesso textures (see Art Journal Caravan 2011 Provisions {Parcel 30} Apprentice Art Box Edition By Tangie). As posted in the description, “It contains 19 gesso “painted” textures in .png format and includes 4 bonus gesso shadow styles in .asl format for PS/PSE users (won’t work in all programs but you can still very easily use the gesso textures!). It is designed to work well with The Art Journal Caravan. It’s also great for everyday scrapping or altered art projects.”
The Art Journal Caravaners embraced the gesso textures immediately and an outpouring of creations filled the gallery. Here are a handful…please click on the images to give them some love in the gallery.

Art Journaling 101: Supply Basics – Taking the Mystery Out of Gesso
Taking the Mystery Out of Gesso
When I started out in mixed media and art journaling, it took me forever to figure out what Gesso is used for. It seemed to me that I heard the term used quite often, but could never figure out quite exactly how and why it was used. Let me put you on the fast track to learning all about Gesso today!
My first word of advice is you do not have to go out and buy Gesso right away! Some artists use Gesso all the time, some artists never use it. If you are a beginner, I suggest take your time just doing art journaling with what you have, but read this and have the knowledge of what Gesso is. You’ll know when you’re ready to buy Gesso. When I was a beginner, the curiousity of Gesso was killing me…I just couldn’t find anyone to explain it to me to my satisfaction. So check out this post, and then put Gesso on your wish list!
This article will also show you a number of projects using gesso, and then a handful of free online tutorials of gesso techniques. Enjoy!
ALL ABOUT GESSO
One very useful website for information on using Gesso in Art Journaling is Aisling’s Artist’s Journals. In an art journal, one can use Gesso underneath paint, under embellishments, as a support under heavy collage, to keep acrylics and markers from bleeding through to the next page, and to adhere two pages together in an altered book to make them strong enough to art journal on. You can also transform a glossy paper or covering to a matte one with Gesso.
Gesso looks like paint unless it is Clear Gesso. Most often you will see Gesso in white, less often in black, but it does come in many colors.
WHERE TO BUY GESSO
Gesso is sold at art stores and big box crafts stores in the paint aisle. You can buy it online as well…usually it is at least $10 however, I found this Certified Artist’s Gesso for less than $7 here. If anyone can testify to it, please leave a comment. The same link offers many other types and brands of Gesso. Usually I have used Liquitex and Golden.
USING GESSO
Gesso, unlike paint, creates a rough surface when applied, which allows other mediums to catch to it. It is not as thick as paint, so it can merge into the background.
You can add acrylic paint to Gesso. You will get a muted in color, chalky result when you add a color acrylic to Gesso. However, the acrylic paint will now be thicker. Milliande.com suggests using Golden Acrylic Paints to mix with Gesso as “as they have a lovely color intensity in their pigment but also don’t alter the fluidity of the gesso too much.” She also suggests, “You can also add concentrated watercolors like Dr PH Martins Watercolors or colored inks. Colored pigments can be added to gesso as well like twinkling H2o’s, Pearl Ex Powders for a shimmering effect.”
You can use just a foam brush with gesso. Or you can use an implement to create a texture, such as a comb to leave ridges.
Here is a wonderful video by Milliande creating an art journal page with Gesso:

Saturdays Are Fun: Silhouette Inspiration
Source: google.co.nz via Julie on Pinterest
Today’s post is inspired by my mother-in-law. On her wall in her living room, she has a very charming vignette of frames surrounding a doorway, and these frames have random silhouettes in them, something similar to the photos above. These are random silhouettes, not silhouettes of anyone she knows. They are very simple, just a frame, a white background, and a black silhouette of a person. Yet they are enchanting. Everytime I see my mother-in-law’s display, which is about 3x’s a month, I think of all the silhouette kits in Tangie’s store! Please click on these links to see the amazing kits by Tangie.

My workspace is a big over stuffed chair that looks out our patio doors into our backyard. Our yard is full of trees that we planted to honor the loss of two pregnancies, the birth of two daughters, and the death of my MIL. It’s hard not to look at those strong (yet fragile) trees and draw a parallel between my growth as a wife, mother, and person w/the growth and care of our trees!

Let me know if you have any questions. I apologize for the quality of the video. LOL

3. Cut out Collage Fodder Head Printable and adhere to page with gel matte medium. (photo below)
4. Draw journaling lines with a fine tip marker or pen.
5. Adhere large border pieces with gel matte medium. (photo below)
6. Adhere Dominoes Collage Printables with gel matte medium. (photo below)
7. Write the journaling “Don’t forget to be awesome!” Outline it with black. Start to outline the borders and add dots. (photo below)
8. Finish with more dots and adhere a butterfly punch to the page. Enjoy your completed art! xoxo
