My Vision for Health Prompt #3

Social Media Team

by Julie Ann Shahin, Social Media Team

Have you ever thought about what it’s like to live to be 100 years old? This week’s journaling prompt for “My Vision for Health” asks you to consider just this. You might fall into one of two groups, those who hope you’ll be full of vigor and in good health at the age of 100, or conversely – afraid of the frailty of a life of 100 years. The good news is that according to the research article Understanding Centenarians’ Psychosocial Dynamics and Their Contributions to Health and Quality of Life,  “Almost 20% of our centenarians (19.4%) rated their health as excellent, and over half of them (52.7%) rated their overall health as good.”

Do you have the personality to be a centenarian? According to the authors of the above article, “Findings from the most recent Georgia Centenarian Study …confirmed a unique set of robust personality traits including low levels of neuroticism, but high levels of extraversion, conscientiousness, and agreeableness [38]. These results confirmed that centenarians showed several unique traits, but that a special combination of traits (i.e., low levels of neuroticism, high conscientiousness, and moderately high extraversion) were also notable in this group of exceptional survivors [38].”

Today more and more of these exceptional survivors are among us. “Current estimates — to be refined by the 2010 U.S. Census — put the U.S. centenarian population at nearly 80,000. By 2050, the census projects as many as 600,000 across the nation.” (via)

My Vision for 2012 Prompt #3 by Julie Ann Shahin

This is a family heritage photo of some of my ancestors. I wrote the “poem” in response to this prompt, with thoughts of a conversation I had years ago with my college roommate & friend from high school in mind. After reading the studies above, my journaling might be different!

If I lived to be 100,
the year would be 2070
If I lived to be 100,
I’d be an old woman
seeing  marvelous  new
technology  and  young/
lives full of hope.
If I lived to be 100,
I might be full of pain,
or I might be full of
new body parts,
who knows?
If I lived to be 100…
