Prompt #8: Friendship Difficulties

by Julie Ann Shahin, Studio Tangie Social Media Team

We are having a lively discussion on the Connect Group about Prompt #3 New Friendships if you would like to join in.

It seems that members of the Book Club either love SARK or just don’t get her. What’s your opinion? We’d love to hear your insights.

I also want to make it clear that you are free to interpret the prompts anyway that you want, you can make up your own prompts if you want, or you don’t even have to follow the book if you are one of the ones who don’t get SARK, and only do the prompts if you wish.

In fact, my page this week kind of veered off into left field, and didn’t really follow the prompt as I intended it to. I was able to bring it back around with my journaling in the end, but sometimes if that isn’t the case…it’s perfectly okay!

Keep sharing and uploading your creations. I so enjoy seeing your talents. Upload to your favorite gallery and share the link (copy and paste the url here on the blog or on our Connect group), or start your own album at our Connect group.

If you are NEW, here are the links you will need to get started:

Anyone can join at anytime!!!

Before I introduce the prompt for this week, let me give you the “instructions” for following the prompt.

Instructions for Each Week

Step 1. Come to the Studio Tangie blog (sign up for email notifications if you prefer) every Saturday February 2  through April 20 to see the prompts and inspiration based on the assigned readings. Tag:

Step 2. Journal based on the prompts. Pick from one or more of the prompts. There will also be an

Art Journal Technique suggestion each week. You can make as many pages or as few pages as you like. Any size, any format, any medium, any supplies, although we do enjoy Studio Tangie products.

Step 3. Participate and make friends in discussion of the readings at the social network as much as you like. Connect in the FREE special group just for us HERE. Register or login with your Facebook account. You can also ask questions there.

Step 4. Upload your finished art journal page from the prompt to the our gallery at Connect (or your favorite gallery), and then post on the Studio Tangie blog, on the corresponding prompt, that you have uploaded your page(s). If possible, leave the url of your page. (Copy and paste). This lets everyone know when to look in the gallery, and I’ll get an email notification.

Step 5. Comment on other group members pages in our group gallery.

Step 6. Make sure you have fun!

Friendship Difficulties

Assignment: Read Chapter 10, Friendship Difficulties (Skip Chapter 8 and Chapter 9)

Pages 189-206

Next, create an art journal page or more from the following prompts.

If something from the book inspires you, instead, go with that. There are no rules in art journaling!

The following prompts are: They Say (quotes), Questions to Ponder, Be Inspired (by specific pages from the book), and Art Journal Technique.

Just do whatever inspires you, however it inspires you.

No rules!!!

The Prompts:

Be inspired by a quotation!

Jealousy is all the fun you think they had.
Erica Jong

I’ve had a few arguments with people, but I never carry a grudge. You know why? While you’re carrying a grudge, they’re out dancing.
Buddy Hackett

Be inspired by one (or more) question(s)!

  1. What have you learned about grudges and resentments over the years from your friendships?
  2. What are some of your recent jealousies relating to your friendships? Have you been on the receiving end?
  3. How do you handle toxic friendships?

Join us in Our Book Club Group at Connect to discuss these questions and the chapter!

Be inspired by the book!

Be inspired by a technique!

ART JOURNAL TECHNIQUE: Play with layers in a new and creative way than you have before.

Inspiration for Prompt #8:

Technique: Play with Layers

“Grudges are for those who insist that they are owed something; forgiveness, however, is for those who are substantial enough to move on.” ― Criss Jami, Salomé: In Every Inch In Every Mile

I thought this was a great quote to remind myself about how valuable it is to forgive and move on and not waste time and energy on being mad. Life is too short for that.

As I’m grieving the end of an important friendship (the one represented earlier in the book club by my armless mermaids), I’ve found myself having to work through an alarming amount of anger. This page contains several layers of hidden text, as I just wrote and purged and wrote and purged. These are not words I ever want to see again, so I had to get them out of me. It was exhausting and intense! Unpleasant as this page is, it was a necessary step toward the healing I crave. This is “the letter you never send,” and I wrote it so there wouldn’t be anything left in me to fuel a grudge.

Art Journal Technique: Playing with Layers

Journaling:
Forgiveness
Never carry a grudge…while you are carrying a grudge, they are out dancing, says Buddy Hackett. So true, yet so incredibly difficult to adhere to in the day to day moments of life. It is hard to know when to just let go and move on, not to marinate in hard feelings and imagine all that could have been said, the things I imagine in the middle of the night. Like an elephant, I never seem to forget someone hurting my feelings, even in jest. So after all these years of study and meditation, of intentional living and relationships, yes, I am better at forgiveness of myself, of others, yet always more forgiving of someone else. Is it that I hold myself to a higher standard? Allow others to treat me better than I treat myself? Possibly, or is it just taking years to know how to set a boundary, to allow others to think, however, whatever, about me, about anything or anyone, none of my business really. For me, just move past the hurt, move past the, “I should have, done, said, been” to acceptance that we are all somewhere on the road of Forgiveness.

Journaling: Always Be Yourself

Always be yourself or else you will resent yourself and perhaps the people around you too. You’ll want to, thus, surround yourself with friends of good character.

Say what you feel and do what you want (within reason), the people who mind don’t matter and the people who matter don’t mind.  (inspired by Dr. Seuss)

If you can be authentic with your friends, you’ll never resent them for it.

Be free.

Fabulous Friendship Festival Book Club

Prompt #7: Tributes to Friends

by Julie Ann Shahin, Studio Tangie Social Media Team

This week we have a special treat! Studio Tangie has added three friends to the Creative Team as I mentioned last week. These friends scrap together in real life! How fun! They have obliged in answering interview questions about their special friendship as written by SARK on page 138 of Fabulous Friendship Festival.

***

INTRODUCING FRIEND #1, LAURA:

Tribute Written by Laura: I met Heather through a few CTs we shared together at SSD. we decided to have monthly scrap nights with the ladies around us…thus i met Dalis…and Jaimie!

I’m the most southernly of all of us Illinoisians. I’m about 75 mi south of Chicago.

I love having these girls to be silly with and to vent about stuff that ‘regular’ real life friends don’t get.

Other than that….I’m 35, mama to two crazy girls (wonder where they get that from) and i’ve been married to my husband Darik for 10 years! i’ve been digiscrapping since my oldest daughter, Emma, was born almost 8 years ago (gaaah! Crying or Very sad ).

***

INTRODUCING FRIEND #2, DALIS

Tribute Written by Dalis: How did we meet in real life? Well, you see these two marvelous ladies had been getting together for a few months and one day Sarah (another of the IL gals) asked me “Hey, don’t you live close to Aurora?” and I was “I live in Aurora, why?”. Next thing I know she invites me into this fancy private FB group of gals talking about meeting. I check the address and mapquest is telling me it’s 7 mins away!!!! I couldn’t believe it so I drove by, I know very stalky, right?

We all met for the first time at the end of last year in Heather’s house. The first get together that I went, I arrived 3 hrs late, yep… I live 7 mins away but my day was totally booked so I knew I was going to make it late, but there was no stopping me! LOL!!! We had a blast, I think it made our friendships COMPLETE, kwim?

I feel Laura is like my identical twin and we were just separated at birth. We have this dark sense of humor that is just perfection… to top it off we have the two firecracker daughters of the group. One girly girl and one tom-boy just to balance better.

With Heather is different, we compliment each other. She is the good sister of the three of us… LOL!!!! Of course thanks to how close we live I get to spend some extra time with her and her family and let’s just say that it feels like we have known each other for a LOOOOONG time (in a good way!).

What are some of your favorite or funny things about your friendship?
The other day I was instant messaging both of them at the same time but in different windows. I asked them something and they both replied the same thing with the same words and everything… I thought it was hilarious that we all thought the same thing!

Oh one more thing, last time we met Laura said something that really made me chuckle… she said “it is funny like you think my daughter is funny and I think your daughter is funny, but we both think our daughters are being annoying at this moment” It is so true… LOL!!!

What have you learned from your friendship?
* That you should NEVER give coffee infused chocolate cupcakes to kids at 9pm.
* That Oscar Mayer sells little baggies of pre-made bacon.
* That Heather’s stomach has no end when cake is added into the equation.
* That everyone needs seasoned salt in their pantry to have a complete pantry.
* That I know they’ve got my back!

***

LAST, BUT NOT LEAST – FRIEND #3, HEATHER (AKA heathergw):

Tribute Written by Heather: Laura and I met on a creative team and found out we didn’t live too far from each other and met in person at a mall near me… the girls totally hit it off right away. I knew Dalis also from a couple creative teams and then met in person at the end of one of my monthly scrap nights and I felt like we’d been old friends for many years.

Laura keeps me in check, she tells it like it is and I know I can always count on her, we’re completely different yet it’s never awkward.

Dalis, is like the neighbor I always wanted and never had. We could talk for hours and we’re always there for each other when we need a little pick me up Smile

What are some of your favorite or funny things about your friendship?
Dalis has this secret room in her house that I wish I could just move into and live.

Laura tells it like it is and doesn’t fib to avoid hurting my feelings, I know I can always get an honest opinion from her.

Journaling: I don’t tell you often enough that I love you, my darling friend! You are the best kind of friend, because while you always accept me as I am, you also challenge me to dig deeper and be more.

You have such beauty and strength. I love your devotion to God; the respect and affection you have for your husband; the magnificent depth and breadth you give to your children; and the selflessness and joy with which you throw your arms open to the world. You’ve found the Good Way, and you walk it.

Art Journaling Technique: DoodleThis week I drew my own doodles on paper, scanned them into Photoshop and turned them into brushes and used them on this page. Thank you for all the creative sparks!

Journaling: I’ve learned that I don’t need to prove anything to my friends or gain their love and approval by “performing” or being some way that I’m not.

My friendships allow me the space to explore and experience many qualities and ways of being.

I thought these two quote from Sark really summed up my feelings about friendship. Good friends are there to help you see all the wonderful things that are possible in your life.

Journaling: I truly love and treasure you in all our similarities and differences. May our friendship continue to evolve and grow, deepen and become even sweeter. May your friendship with yourself expand, and may our paths intersect wherever and however it best lifts and fills us.

Journaling:
You are orderly English knot gardens, I’m shaggy unruly borders.
You are cream, off white, and tan, I’m violet, red violet, and terra cotta
You are strictly conservative, I am middle of both ends of the spectrum
You are fast food fun, I am massive organic salads
You are terrified of change, I am terrified of endless the same.
You are high heels and perfume, I am flats and unscented.
You are shopping as a hobby, I am paint, pencils, and paper.
You are current news and conspiracy, I am historical novel.
Opposite ends of the spectrum. Opposite ends of life.
Yet best friends forever.

Art Journaling Technique: Mixed Media

The most beautiful discovery true friends make is that they can grow separately without growing apart. ~Elisabeth Foley

This is a page I began at Tangie’s Wonderland Art Journaling Workshop last year. I created the painted and splattered background, glued on the papers and image of the woman and added some washi tape. The page has sat unfinished in my journal waiting for some inspiration to finish it. I thought this week’s theme of mixed media would be the perfect opportunity to add some digital elements. I really love that I was able to blend my two worlds – paper and digital- so seamlessly.

Prompt: What was the best thing you ever did for a friend’s birthday?

Journaling: My favorite memories of celebrating friends’ birthdays was what we did our freshman year in college.  A group of us on our floor would celebrate each other’s special days as a group. The dorm rom would get decorated with curled ribbon, and there would be plastic champagne cups, plus a cake. We were silly and fun.

Technique: Mixed Media

I really just did the mixed media on the left and top border, using paint, stamps/ink, marker, and stickers.

Inspired by Blessing by SARK for Ending Friendship with Former Friend

Journaling: Dear Friends Of Old,
I am writing to thank you for having been my friend. Thank you for all the fun, all the good, all the blessings you shared with me.

I now release our former friendship and bring things full circle. From all of you, I learned so much. I learned it is ok to be myself, about the Girlfriend Code, that things are always what they appear to be.
I learned to trust no one except God.

I learned what a true friend is. I learned to define my morals. I learned about jealousy.

The gifts I received from you all were precious. I received the gift of parnters-in-crime, meeting new people from different places, being taken in on holiday. I received gifts of laughter, companionship, and acceptance.

I am so grateful for the lessons I learned, especially that it’s ok to be myself. I’m grateful to learn things are not always what they appear to be. I’m grateful that I now know how to spot a true friend. I’m grateful to have received the gift of meeting new people from new places. I’m grateful to have received the gift of being taken in on a holiday. I’m grateful for all the laughter. I’m grateful for the companionship. I’m grateful for the acceptance.

I do consider our friendship a blessing, and this letter gives tribute to that blessing. I wish you well.

Love, Julie Ann
