Art Journaling 102: Technique Focus – Lighting (with Tutorial and Links)

by Julie Ann Shahin, Studio Tangie Social Media Team

light·ing [lahy-ting]

noun

1. the act of igniting or illuminating: the lighting of many candles; the annual lighting of the Christmas tree.

2. the arrangement of lights to achieve particular effects: to work out the lighting for one’s living room.

3. an effect achieved by the arrangement of lights: Several critics praised the lighting of the play.
4. the science, theory, or method of achieving particular effects by the use of lights.

5. the way light falls upon a face, object, etc., especially in a picture.

Source: Dictionary.com

The Science of  Light and Color

When I was studying at Michigan State University, I had to take a science class to graduate, so I chose the Science of Light and Color, as being an artsy person I thought this would be most interesting to me. Twenty years later, don’t ask me to re-iterate what I learned in that class.

Although, working on this blog post, a few tidbits might come back to me.

You might think in Art Journaling that you only need to worry about light and lighting when you are shadowing an object, or creating sun rays, etc. However, just like in my University class, light mixes with color to produce dramatic results. “Although Aristotle and other ancient scientists had already written on the nature of light and color vision, it was not until Newton that light was identified as the source of the color sensation.” (Wikipedia)

“When sunlight shines through a prism, you can see all the colors of the rainbow (or visible spectrum). In fact, daylight is a mix of all colors. All the colors of nature come from light.” (Discover Lighting)

MUST READ:

How do we apply this light theory to our designs?

One of the important design basics is contrast, which can be achieved through lighting.

“Lighting can be described as being “soft” or “hard”.  Diffused light is soft. It minimizes shadows and provides a more relaxing and less visually compelling atmosphere.  When used alone, however, the effect can be lacking in interest, like an outdoor scene on an overcast day.

The artful use of hard light can provide highlights and shadows that emphasize texture and add beauty to form, as with direct sunlight.  Small unshielded sources such as a bare lamp or a candle flame can add an effect of brilliance or sparkle.”

Tangie has several products in her shoppe for applying light (and shadow) to your pages. Also you will find many of her kits have a lighting element or two as well. I will name some of these as well as give you links to tutorials for lighting effects in Photoshop below.

Inspiration for Technique Focus: Lighting with Steps

Julie Ann

Here is the final image that I will walk you through the steps in which I applied lighting. I go from this…

to this with the lighting effects applied!

Step 1. Open page in Photoshop/ Elements

****************

Step 2. Add wavy highlight with lines from AJC11 Parcel 42 by Tangie Lighting Effects. Go to Layer –> New Adjustment Layer –> Gradient Map. Click ok twice. Go to Layer –> Group with Previous.

Now go back and pick the color of the gradient map. To do so, double click on the “layer thumbnail” of the gradient map. Click on the drop-down menu to open Gradient Color Picker, click on double arrows for more options, click on color harmonies.

Click ok.

*********************

Step 3. Add the solid wavy highlight from AJC11 Parcel 42 by Tangie Lighting Effects. Set the blending mode to Saturation, Opacity 84%. This gives a nice shadow contrast.

*********************

Step 4. Add a wavy shadow lighting effect fromAJC11 Parcel 42 by Tangie Lighting Effects. Change the blending mode to Overlay, Opacity 68%.

*********************

Step 5. Add light element from Up, Up, & Away by Tangie. Position part of the light behind the “o” in “worth.”

*********************

Step 6. Add another light element from Up, Up, & Away by Tangie. This goes in the lower left part of the heart.

*********************

Step 7. Add a glowy light effect. Apply the style Tangie Galaxy Glows from the SUPER HERO BUNDLE by Tangie.

*********************

Step 8. Add the orange light from Up, Up, & Away by Tangie behind “feelings” in the upper right area of the heart for the finishing touch!!! The page is complete.

Art Journaling 102: “I Don’t Have Anything to Journal About” Myth-Buster Prompt #5

Welcome to our I Don’t Have Anything to Journal About” Myth-Buster Prompt #5 by Tangie!

Prompt: List 5 people you know. Then describe them in 5 words.

Prompt #5 by Heather aka sparklyduck75

by Julie Ann Shahin, Studio Tangie Social Media Team

One way to approach this prompt is to think of 5 people you know with something in common, such as 5 neighbors, 5 family members, 5 men, 5 women, 5 influential people, 5 teachers, 5 children, 5 people who cook well, 5 funny people, etc. I myself decided to focus on 5 neighbors. Heather, in the page with the red balloon below, focused on loving family members that share their best with her. Tam featured 5 women in her family that shared things in common.

My next step was to think of personality adjectives for each neighbor, and of course, I looked to google for help. I used this list of 130 Positive Personality Adjectives. I get so overloaded with my brain, that sometimes it helps to look at a list when I get stuck.

You might decide instead to list 5 reasons you are grateful for each person. You don’t have to follow the prompt exactly, instead of 5 words, it can be a list of 5 reasons.  For more ideas, see the Must Read Prompt: Describe the People in Your Life below.

Another thing that I did in my art journal page was to use something symbolic to represent my neighbors. I used some artsy birds for each neighbor whereas if I were creating a scrapbook page instead, I would have used their photographs. The art journal frees you to be creative and find alternatives!

Dad is visionary, charismatic, talented, generous, and wise.
Mom is intuitive, warm, creative, affectionate, and pragmatic.
Grandpa is thoughtful, gentle, faithful, intelligent, and resourceful.
Grandma is loving, devoted, selfless, resilient, and sensitive.
Don is genuine, caring, gracious, discerning, and compassionate.
Grace is spirited, joyous, tender-hearted, perceptive, and friendly.

I am loved by amazing people who share their best with me.

I realized that of every group of 5 I came up with, there were a lot of things in common, so I used the grid configuration on this background to line up pictures to represent 5 women in my family (mom’s side) and let the things they shared in common “touch” each picture. Then I “covered it in gesso”!! Even digitally I think that’s my favorite part!

Art Journaling 102: Focus on Hybrid

by Julie Ann Shahin, Studio Tangie Social Media Team

Art Journal 2012 Caravaners are filling up the gallery with paper and hybrid journal pages, and it’s so exciting! It’s time to focus on hybrid here on the Studio Tangie blog, don’t you agree?

HYBRID IS…

Hybrid is pixels plus paper, for the newbies. Any combination of the two. There are many fabulous ways to creatively use your computer and printer, your handwriting and fussy cutting skills, and mix it all up! As I say many many times, and  never get tired of saying, the only limit to it all is your own imagination.

NEW!

Studio Tangie has lots of awesome New Printables in the shoppe, including the oh so FABULOUS Tangible Plans™. I have to tell you that these Tangible Plans are very addicting to make!!!! I love them. You’ll see one of my pages using a Tangible Plan below (right page of art journal below). To check out Tangie’s Tangible Plans and all the new add-ons, just search for “zippyplans” in the shoppe.

BIG SALE!

Tangie also has put up for Sale a whole bunch of PRINTABLES in her CLOSEOUTS section that were previously retired, I believe. Get those now too! They are called ARTist Sheets and Artspiration Boards.

For your pleasure today, we have hybrid art journal pages from the Studio Tangie Creative Team, and I also pulled some hybrid pages from the Art Journal Caravan gallery! Enjoy!

Inspiration: Focus on Hybrid

These pages were made from a dismantled cookbook/notebook, using gesso, phone book pages, acrylic and watercolor paints, glimmer mist, gel pens, stamps, light modeling paste, embroidery thread and bracelet chain, and printed artwork by Tangie!

I used two of Tangie’s Studio Box Workshops to create these two pages in a 12 x 12 journal by Fancy Pants. I added fussy cuts from wallpaper, magazines, and collage pieces by Tangie. I had so much fun with these, and you can tell I just love color!

Left Page

This page was created from Studio Box Workshop #1, and I used water-soluble crayons on the edges. I journaled with an American Crafts Slicker Pen, added wallpaper that I fussy cut, and a few collage pieces by Tangie.

Right Page

I also used water-soluble crayons on the edges of the printables to give an artsy look. I outlined a few items with a black pen, and some of the journaling was done with a Zig Memory Marker. It was raining the day that I made this page so I added the girl with the umbrella from a magazine.

PERMISSION TO PLAY

THE PROMPT: Something I really want to accomplish this year is __________.

Stay the course with my altered book called HAPPY NEW DAY. I want to experiment, explore, and practice new techniques in the hybrid world of art journaling as I document my days. In order to support this dream I have …
• Signed up for workshops & classes (probably way too many LOL) … AND … integrate the inspiration and prompts into my book
• Set up my hybrid art journaling space
• Am re-organizing my digital supplies
*Given myself permission to play in my art journal every day
Supplies used: acrylic paints, pitt pens, gel pens,
NBC Cutie Patootie (face & word art)

Thought I’d share these here at the AJC…I used Tangie’s Tangibles. The templates are awesome; especially if you don’t have lots of time to create (like me at the moment). After creating the pages digitally, I printed them out. I did not save the digital files…as this will force me to use pen and pencil (or maybe even crayon) to finish the page.

This year, I’ll probably have two art journals, a digital one, and a completely handmade one. I’ve started the handmade one already. The cover is done and my first page is done. Actually, the journal I have is a fabulous handmade journal by Tangie Baxter. You can find them in her Etsy shop. Anyway, I wanted to share my new artwork with you all.

Week 06 Page

The background for this page is some wonderful fabric with skulls and glitter on it! I glued it down and then glued on the pieces, I printed one of Tangie’s hearts with the word Listographs on it and glued it on, some bubble wrap gesso, stamped letters and journaling and I think the page is done.
Journaling reads: “Proud to of overcome. 1. Not graduating from High school. Got GED went to college. 2. Being molested. 3. Being raped @S 13. 4. Being in a very abusive relationship. (I left) 5. Depression. My past doesn’t control my present or my future!”

I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with my painted collaged bits and after digitizing and playing with them for a while realized I’d never celebrated my morning coffee ritual in my art journal. No earth shattering philosophical messages here, just a bit of fun.

One Little Word 2012: Embrace

For far too long, I’ve been a collector of art supplies, rather than a user. With this year’s journal, I’d like to change that, so I’ve delved into my stash. My word is embrace, and I was inspired by this short poem.

Supplies: Affliction and 1942 Report fonts, coffee for staining, watercolor pencils, Tattered Angels glimmer mist, Bo Bunny papers, letters and stickers (Gabrielle and Et Cetera collections)

Nevermore

Bohemian Rhapsody

I haven’t done a hybrid piece since the summer. But my amazing friend Ruth came by for a sleepover and I couldn’t resist. She is doing amazing work with tea bags but rather than follow her delicate example (she empties the bag and flattens it which provides an amazing background frame texture), I just threw on a filled herbal tea bag. Besides Ruth, I need to give a nod to Rabbit whose self challenge appealed to me immensely and thus my first challenge: to do a zeti type piece.

Materials: Acrylics and lots of modifiers (gels, pearlizers), Neo-Colours, Derwent Inktense watercolours, Tombow, masking tape, Sharpie Poster pen, Uniball Signo, Gel pen
Digital: Crowabout Studios Woot2 (head, arms, wings), Tumblefish Studios Fishy (shoes and stockings)

BOLD

Be BOLD and mighty forces will come to your aid.

I have had a block for months now. I haven’t even made a single Caravan page yet I think. I start a lot of pages but never really finish anything. Yesterday I heard that quote on a TV show (don’t remember which show, sorry) and it just kept repeating in my head. This afternoon I once again sat down with my journal and hoped to make something. I added some of the background paint and it was quite bold and 1 hour later the page was done. YAY.

Supplies: The circles are punched from some of the many backgrounds I have painted lately. The butterflies are from a vintage notecard kit by Maryjo Koch. The fonts are from our very own Tangie Baxter. I used cheapy watercolors and Crayola Slick Stix (love those).

and this one, below, I don’t think is hybrid- but since I’m writing this blog post, I guess I can put anything here! I don’t think you’ll complain! Isn’t it gorgeous?

2012 Itinerary #5

Mixed-Media week #5,
I knew my journaling was going somewhere I wasn’t ready to share with everyone so I snapped a picture with my phone before I finished writing!

LOVE LOVE this quote, and it has inspired me to be more BOLD

Now it’s your turn!

I hope this has inspired you to be hands-on and get your hands messy! Be sure to share your hybrid art journal pages with us in the gallery.

“I Don’t Have Anything to Journal About” Myth-Buster NEW PROMPT

Welcome to our I Don’t Have Anything to Journal About” Myth-Buster Prompt #5 by Tangie!

(For those of you keeping count, last month I incorrectly numbered the prompt #5 instead of #4 (now corrected), so this is truly #5 this month! Yay!)

If you had to be trapped in a TV show for a month, which show would you choose?

If I had to be trapped in a TV show for a month, what show would I choose? I went through my DVR timers to see if any of today’s current shows that I enjoy would  be something I could stand as my life for a month. New Girl, Community, Parks and Recreation, The Office, Once Upon a Time, Glee, Harry’s Law, I Hate My Teenage Daughter, Revenge, 2 Broke Girls, Whitney, Fringe, Two and a Half Men, The Simpsons, Parenthood, Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, The Good Wife, 30 Rock, Up All Night, Hot in Cleveland, Smash, Pan Am, Happy Endings, Best Friends Forever, Scandal…whoa, seems like I sit in front of the T.V. all day but really I just let it play in the background often. Then I did some google research for the most popular T.V. shows of all-time to see if any shows of past decades could fit the bill.

Eventually, I came around to a former guilty pleasure that I’m taking a break from…The Real Housewives from Bravo. I’m not sure if this prompt had in mind Reality T.V. shows, yet I couldn’t shake the idea. I wouldn’t do it for the money or fame, I’d do it to share “This is me, take it or leave it. I love me.” Actually, when I read the prompt about a month ago or so, I had this same idea of doing the Real Housewives of my city for the page. I even thought of putting local high-profile scrapbookers faces in for the art dolls. Perhaps I’ll eventually do a “scrapbooker” theme for this page, but I kind of like just doing random, no-identity this time around. You’ll see what I mean in my page below.

I’ve always been a sucker for British period dramas, and Downton Abbey is no exception. If I could spend a month in that world, I don’t know whether I’d rather be upstairs or downstairs–the characters and stories are equally intriguing (although they do have the better costumes upstairs!). Something about our aggressive, high-speed, in-your-face, fast food society makes an escape to these kinds of stories irresistible: a place where manners are strictly observed, everyone understands they exist in service to one another, and sitting down to a family dinner is a carefully preserved event. And what would I give to follow Dame Maggie Smith around for a while? Although in many ways, I know life in those times was far more difficult (especially for women), I wish more of the gentility of the era could’ve stayed with us. It’s absolute agony that there are only seven episodes in a season… thank God for DVDs.

Art Journaling 102: Digi Technique Focus – The Clone Tool with Tutorials

Welcome to our fifth amazing

Technique Feature of 2012:

Creative Uses of  the Clone Tool!

Preview of Finished Page

The Clone Tool in Photoshop is most popularly used for covering over un-wanted portions of an image, such as covering

by Julie Ann Shahin, Studio Tangie Social Media Team

an unwanted telephone wire by “cloning” the sky in the same image.  (See the Ultimate Guide to Cloning in Photoshop)

Today I’d like to introduce several tutorials I’ve found on the internet for digital scrapbooking that may interest you. I’ve used a few of these techniques to create my finished page you see above, and larger at the end of this post.

TUTORIALS

Creative PS & PSE Clone Tool Tutorials for Scrapbooking and Art Journaling

Inspiration

Here’s how I used some of the tutorials on my page.

Image 1:

First, I started following the tutorial Digital Scrapbooking Tutorial- Creating a Seamless Pattern at justmommies.com.  I chose to open a yellow paper by Tangie, I transformed it to a smaller size square, then duplicated it six times to create the tile pattern you see in the above image.

Image 2:

I continued following the same tutorial, cloning the paper to cover the seams. I followed the tutorial through to the end. Then for added interest, I created the result into a pattern. I used the Pattern Stamp Tool set on Impressionist to add more interest to this background.

Image 3:

I added my art doll who had this great bird nest f or a hat. I decided to add birds into my background. I used the Clone Tool to do this. I was inspired by the tutorialAdvanced Digital Scrapbooking Techniques: Custom Brush with Clone Stamp by Pattie Knox

{First, select the layer that the Art Doll is on.  Using the Clone Stamp Tool, select the area of t he bird you wish to clone, hold down the Alt key, and and click with your mouse on that area. Then, create a new layer below the art doll, and above your background layer. On this new layer, position the mouse where you would like to stamp, and click the mouse, which will stamp the area of the bird that you selected to clone.}

Repeat the instructions within the { } for the other birds as many times as desired.

Image 4:

Next, I duplicated that layer and rotated it horizontally for symmetry several times.

In my final image, I did cover most of this with gesso for a collage look.

Image 5:

Finally, I wanted my word art to stand out so I decided to use the Clone Stamp Tool to duplicate the splattergraffiti strokes behind it. This was a matter of trial and error until I got just the look I wanted.

Image 6:

This image shows my result after I finished cloning the splattergraffiti. With a solid color behind it, the word art is easier to read.

April To Do: Crochet

Crochet is my newest hobby since last summer, and so I’ve been pinning free patterns and tips. I’ve been thinking that it would be a good idea to start collecting these in a Journal so I can work on them off line. I absolutely love the Tangible Plans, so addicted to them. I haven’t posted the other ones I’ve done yet because I’m making them into a hybrid book, but I’ve made a ton of  pages so far!

“I Don’t Have Anything to Journal About” Myth-Buster *Updated

Welcome to our I Don’t Have Anything to Journal About” Myth-Buster Prompt #4 by Tangie!

Which of the four seasons do you most anticipate?

by Julie Ann Shahin, Studio Tangie Social Media Team

Journal your thoughts and upload your page to your blog or favorite gallery. Link it up in the comments of this blog post.

Scroll down to the the Studio Tangie Inspiration pages! *Updated with a new page by Heather aka sparklyduck75

The Myth-Buster prompts come from the Art Journal Caravan Expediation Navigation Guide PDF inside the kit when you sign up for the Expedition, written by Tangie Baxter.

Which of the four seasons do I most anticipate? That’s an easy answer for me every year, having lived my life in the north eastern U.S. all of my life: Rochester, NY currently; Ohio, and Michigan formerly. Summer. I love summer. We have the best summers, not too warm, lots of sun, pleasant days. We live a block from the beach, on the shore of Lake Ontario. A nice, soft-sand beach with a playground for the kids. I do admit I like living in a place where I get to experience all of the seasons, so each season has a place in my heart. Even though I hate being cold, I would miss snow if it disappeared forever. You’ve got to check this out, a humorous take on the subject by Andy Rooney, God rest his soul, click here to read. And check out this pie chart result over at Pioneer Woman.

So just for you, I’ve scoured the internet to bring you inspiration for this prompt. Perhaps one of these quotations will get your creative juices flowing, and set your pen to paper!

Four Seasons Quotations

SPRING

Spring is nature’s way of saying, “Let’s party!” – Robin Williams

It’s spring fever.  That is what the name of it is.  And when you’ve got it, you want – oh, you don’t quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!  ~Mark Twain

I love spring anywhere, but if I could choose I would always greet it in a garden.  ~Ruth Stout

The year’s at the spring
And day’s at the morn;
Morning’s at seven;
The hillside’s dew-pearled;
The lark’s on the wing;
The snail’s on the thorn;
God’s in His heaven -
All’s right with the world!
~Robert Browning

Spring shows what God can do with a drab and dirty world.  ~Virgil A. Kraft

SUMMER

Each fairy breath of summer, as it blows with loveliness, inspires the blushing rose.  ~Author Unknown

Summer afternoon – summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.  ~Henry James

The summer night is like a perfection of thought.  ~Wallace Stevens

A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken.  ~James Dent

Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a day listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is hardly a waste of time.–John Lubbock

AUTUMN

Summer makes me drowsy. Autumn makes me sing. Winter’s pretty lousy, but I hate Spring.” Dorothy Parker

Delicious autumn!  My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.  ~George Eliot

Winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of them all.  ~Stanley Horowitz

Everyone must take time to sit and watch the leaves turn.  ~Elizabeth Lawrence

October gave a party;
The leaves by hundreds came -
The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples,
And leaves of every name.
The Sunshine spread a carpet,
And everything was grand,
Miss Weather led the dancing,
Professor Wind the band.
~George Cooper, “October’s Party”

WINTER

I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape – the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of winter.  Something waits beneath it, the whole story doesn’t show.  ~Andrew Wyeth

Let us love winter, for it is the spring of genius.  ~Pietro Aretino

Winter is the time of promise because there is so little to do – or because you can now and then permit yourself the luxury of thinking so.  ~Stanley Crawford

Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire:  it is the time for home.  ~Edith Sitwell

“What fire could ever equal the sunshine of a winter’s day?”
– Henry David Thoreau

“I Don’t Know What to Journal About” Myth-Buster Prompt #5:  Dreamy Midsummer Night

I created this page inspired from a tutorial in the book “Digital Art Wonderland: Creative Techniques for Inspirational Journaling and Beautiful Blogging” by Angi Sullins and Silas Toball. The techniques involved blending textures and using Victorian-style fonts.

Journaling: Then followed that beautiful season… Summer….
Filled was the air with a dreamy and magical light; and the landscape
Lay as if new created in all the freshness of childhood.
~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

I forgot to post this page by Heather!!! Isn’t it gorgeous!!! Be sure to go to the Scrapbookgraphics gallery and give her some love!

I love nothing so much as the earth ripening to its lush autumn. The crisp air, the unbridled color, the song of a thunderstorm as spent leaves dance on the wind. I love the peace of nature’s last hurrah before tucking in for that good and silent night.

Art Journaling 102 – Digi Technique Feature: Curves

Welcome to our fourth exciting

Technique Feature of 2012

CURVES!

(Note: This post is image-heavy, so  please be patient in case it takes a while to load. Thanks bunches!!!)

Let’s face it, curves and waves make for excitement and flow in a layout! Why wouldn’t you want to try them out? There are a number of ways to incorporate curves into your pages.

  • Use pre-made shapes
  • Use the pen tool in Photoshop
  • Have text follow a curve on a path
  • Warp your text in Photoshop Elements to make it wavy
  • Use curved layout, paper, and shape templates
  • Draw curves in Artrage (software)
  • Make curved borders
  • Use swirls and spirals

Let’s see inspiration from the Studio Tangie Creative Team, and then I also have found more inspiration from the Scrapbookgraphics Gallery. Plus, as a bonus, there are links to online tutorials for creating curves!

Inspiration for Technique: Curves – Studio Tangie Creative Team

Julie Ann

“Imagination is the eye of the soul.” – Joseph Joubert

I chose this quotation because the theme of our “My Vision for 2012″ prompts in March is creativity, and this quote spoke to me on that subject. I can’t imagine going a week, or even a few days without creating something. My husband is a musician, and he works on his music every day as well.

Technique: I used a curved template, as well as a curved text path in Photoshop Elements. As a finishing touch, I added a border with curves in it, and stars with swirls.

Karen Bowers – Technique: love the curve of the repeated photo where she used a rainbow gradient overlay with the style set to “radial”

I love this photo of me little, grinning my head off because I’m on my bike and my dad is watching me. Since my AJC 2012 trick is to make brushes out of favorite things, I turned little me into a brush. I put a rainbow gradient overlay with the style set to “radial”. I put a soft inner glow in the large image of me. I like how “little risk taker” can be read two ways.

Nevermore – Technique: what cool curved waves! also she posted a video of the curved journaling in the Art Journal Caravan 2012 forum for us…so awesome!

Week 10: A Maid that Sleeps in Love

Went to town on recolouring on this one. Example, the boat was deconstructed, overlaid with Flergs’ papers which were all hue adjusted. Waves were recoloured with Match colour readjustment and then merged with a Doris Castle paper. And so on. I have posted a video in showing how I did the hand journalling of the lyrics (ArtRage 102) if anyone has any interest.

On Hope Street

From the Frameworthy Gallery: I was inspired by her Encaustics gallery. While she seems to use a lot of squares, with some curves, I’ve deviated from that considerably using mostly curves and a few squares.

We’re moving in July. We both have some trepidation at the idea, for different reasons. So here’s for hope.

Thx for the challenge.

Aplomb

The journaling says….i believe in dreams. Without dreams I would be lost. I guess that is because I am a planner and person who stores their dreams just waiting for the right moment to transpire so it can become a reality. I know too that dreams are fluid things and that is why this year I am tying to stop and smell the roses.

Art Journaling 102 Feature: Spotlight on LK Ludwig’s Blog!

by Julie Ann Shahin, Studio Tangie Social Media Team

This week we have a new fascinating blog to feature: LK Ludwig!

About LK Ludwig: (via the Gryphon’s Feather Online Workshops! blog page)

LK Ludwig is a passionate photographer, painter, book binder and visual journaler, and has authored four books related to visual journaling:

Mixed-Media Nature Journals: New Techniques for Exploring Nature, Life, and Memory

  • {Lori Kay} lives and works in western Pennsylvania with her husband, who is also an artist. They share a belief that in order to see what is really there, you need to be fully present in that moment. Art is part and parcel of their lives, and their work reflects this integration. LK is a firm believer that by working with what we know and using accessible art materials- a digital camera, a printer, and basic art supplies- we can create wonderful, meaningful artwork. With studio spaces that are in the middle of her family’s life (the entry way of their home and an island in the kitchen of their river cottage), with small children, an artist-husband, and a puppy underfoot, LK works each day, inspired by what she sees through her camera lens and with her heart. LK … loves traveling throughout the U.S. teaching classes on art journaling, bookbinding, artist books, and doll-making.”
