Art Journaling 102: Technique Feature – {Hybrid} Tutorial
Art Journaling 102: Technique Feature – {Hybrid} Tutorial
Gesso Wash & Borders
For our second Technique Feature of 2012, I’ll be sharing with you a Hybrid Tutorial as I create an Art Journal Page where I use a Gesso Wash and show you how I build up my Borders to create this page, shown above.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Tip: There is an awesome Art Journaling Supply and Resource List included in Tangie’s Studio Box Workshop 1: Buildable Art Journals.
1. Start with a blank page in your art journal. I happened to turn to a pre-painted page with paint splatters from previous art journaling. Having a painted layer first is optional.
____________________________________________________
2. Print backgrounds and elements from Tangie’s Collage Mania 1 & 2 kits, these kits are printables. Cut out elements now or as you need them. Sometimes in the evening, I’ll just sit and cut out elements as I watch television.
____________________________________________________
3. Take several of the printed backgrounds, and cut one or two vertical strips from them. Adhere to the page with a glue stick.
____________________________________________________
4. Continue adhering strips across the page. Select a border base for the top of the page and adhere.
____________________________________________________
5. Mix a little water in with gesso. Swipe over the strips to give a white water wash. Do not paint over the top horizontal border, just the vertical strips.
____________________________________________________
6. Adhere a border at the bottom. Cut out and adhere elements such as a heart, flower, and row of paint dots and add at the end of the border.
____________________________________________________
7. Build up the top border by adding a smaller border along the top, a piece of word art that says “opinions” along the side on the left, and the girl head element.
____________________________________________________
8. Build up the bottom border by layering elements such as a star and circle behind the border on the right. Also layer word art (from Pinterest), another star, heart, cabuchon, key, time, paint brush, and borders.
____________________________________________________
9. Next, I adhered an image of a vintage movie star that I cut from an old book. I used mini letter stickers for the title, and then doodled around the letter stickers with my Copic marker, or you can use a black sharpie.
____________________________________________________
10. Then I wrote my journaling out on pre-cut cardstock strips.
____________________________________________________
11. Adhere the finished journaling strips to the page. Add dots around selected strips. Draw a line around the arrow. Adhere photo corners to the first and last journaling strip. Create shading with dots under the photo of the mvintage movie star. Outline the star in the bottom border with dots. Add any other finishing touches according to taste! Here is the end result:

Art Journaling 101: Buildable Art Journals Part 2
As promised last week, I am sharing my updated Buildable Art Journal Pages with you today. Hello all! xoxo
I started the pages from this to this to —–>what you see above and below.
I used Tangie’s Buildable Art Journal Pages plus I also did some creative Word Art on notebook paper as you can see.
The above page is direct from Tangie’s {Studio Box Workshops No. 1} Buildable Art Journals. I used it to journal our trip to the Jersey Shore last week, and about family visiting from out-of-state over the weekend. After it was printed with the digital gesso overlay, and the digital days of the week on it, by hand, I doodled and journaled with my markers – which included Copics, and Sharpies.
Here are my other pages that I completed this week. One was a doodling page with the base created from Tangie’s Buildable Art Journals, and the other was just a notebook paper that I used to make word art on.
First, let’s look at the Doodling Page and inspiration.
On this page, I used various markers: Copics, Tombows, and scrapbooking markers. The Copics and Tombows work best on printed inkjet paper, and the scrapbooking marker works for small areas but not for larger areas. There are also stickers on this page, and some water-soluble crayons too. Working inside circles was a neat creative challenge that I haven’t done before.
Second, here is my word art page. Since my weekly planner page above was based on our trip to the Jersey Shore this week, I looked for a quotation on travel. “Travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent in the ideas of living.” Miriam Beard
This was a fun page to experiment with different styles of lettering and doodling.
The steps to creating this page were to
- write out the quote varying the lettering for each word
- add the lines between the words (I know sometimes this is usually done first)
- color in the words
- doodle in the spaces between the lines
- color in behind the words
- color in the doodles
- add details
And I’d like to show you some of the talent that inspired me:
First, two examples from my extremely talented friend JoAnne Sharpe, (who offers art journal workshops in Fairport, NY if you are in the area -email her to join her email list, email is on her blog):

Art Journaling 101: Buildable Art Journals
Hello friends! Today I’m working with{Studio Box Workshops No. 1} Buildable Art Journals By Tangie. I have to say that I haven’t had as much fun with hybrid pages in quite a while as with these! I give Tangie’s video tutorials in the workshop two thumbs up.
The photos show you the pages ready to be journaled and doodled in. I can’t wait!
The item that took these pages over the top for me, really gave me excitement, was adding water-soluble wax crayons to the printed pages. I only have about 4 colors that I had bought individually at an art store. You just draw, add water, and it becomes paint! According to Cheap Joe’s, “Because each artist crayon has exceptional covering properties you can apply them over existing color and quickly add some visual punch to a dull area. These watersoluble crayons come in 84 colorfast shades that are mixable for infinite variety of colors. These artist crayons are usable on any material and with many watercolor techniques.”
I also used my Copic Black Marker or you can use a Black Sharpie. Either one will write on the printed page, to add doodling, details, and journaling.
Here’s a look at the full-sized pages:
I wish I could tell you all the secrets behind making these pages, but you’ll have to take the workshop to find out! You will totally enjoy it. I’ll share an update with you next week on the progress I’ve made.
