My Vision for 2012: Family Prompt #2

Prompt: Start out by asking yourself what a 25th family reunion might look like in your family? What do you want it to look like? What might others be saying about your family or about each other?
Create an art journal page answering this question, include at least a paragraph of journaling.
A year ago in May I suggested to my side of the family that we have a family reunion, as it had been a while since I’d seen my cousins and their families. When we were young, we saw my aunts, uncles, and cousins at every holiday. Now that we have families of our own, I see my cousins at weddings, showers, and funerals. Of course, at funerals you always say, “I hope we see each other at a happier time soon.”
One reason that I was inspired to follow through on a family reunion is that my husband’s family has been having family reunions every other year as a time-honored tradition. His father was one of 11 children so there are many, many aunts, uncles and cousins that it would be impossible to keep track of if not for the family reunions.
I’ve certainly learned about the flavor and culture of my husband’s ethnicity through the family reunion…from the food, music, and dancing. A lot of pride and love.
Popular Reasons for Having a Family Reunion
- To take action to show people how much you love them and to show kindness to them, thus teaching children that love you give is the love you get.
- Traditions are very important.
- To strengthen the feeling of belonging.
- To strengthen our identity and in turn, self-esteem. Family heritage instills pride.
- To create real life role models in the family to be admired instead of distant sports figures or imaginary super heroes.
- To grow structure if the family reunion takes place within a cultural festival such as the local Irish, Octoberfest, Mediterrean festival or at a Church festival.
- To celebrate a milestone.
- To pay tribute to someone.

- “When we die we become ‘stories’ in the minds of other people.” -Unknown
- “This packrat has learned that what the next generation will value most is not what we owned, but the evidence of who we were and the tales of how we loved. In the end, it’s the family stories that are worth the storage.” -Ellen Goodman
- “If you were going to die soon and had only one phone call you could make, who would you call and what would you say? And why are you waiting?” -Stephen Levine
- “The lack of emotional security of our American young people is due, I believe, to their isolation from the larger family unit. No two people – no mere father and mother – as I have often said, are enough to provide emotional security for a child. He needs to feel himself one in a world of kinfolk, persons of variety in age and temperament, and yet allied to himself by an indissoluble bond which he cannot break if he could, for nature has welded him into it before he was born.” - Pearl S. Buck
- “Human beings are the only creatures on earth that allow their children to come back home.”-Bill Cosby
- “ The reason grandparents and grandchildren get along so well is that they have a common enemy.” -Sam Levenson

PROMPT FOR NEW MAY FAMILY THEME: How would we like our family, relatives, and guests to feel when they enter our home?

About the May Theme: Family
Happy iNSD! Are you having fun? Let’s first talk about the new theme “Family” before we look at the first prompt for May. I always start with a look at the definition of the theme word, which is “Family”. And then, provide synonyms for your journaling.
fam·i·ly
[fam-uh-lee, fam-lee] , plural fam·i·lies, adjective
noun
1. a. a basic social unit consisting of parents and their children, considered as a group, whether dwelling together or not: the traditional family.
About Prompt #1
How would we like our family, relatives, and guests to feel when they enter our home? I like this prompt because I have an interior design background! Yet this prompt is more than just about making your house pretty and/or functional. It’s about making your home your sanctuary, your shelter, your harbor.
“To be happy at home is the ultimate result of all ambition, the end to which every enterprise and labor tends.” -Samuel Johnson
If you go from room to room in your home, what feelings emerge in each room? Are they the feelings you wish for your family and friends to feel as well in your home? One of the greatest compliments I received in my apartment that I lived in as a single woman was from a friend – she told me, as we sat in living room, that my place had “a spiritual feel” to it. I felt that as well and it was nice to be validated by her comment. There were no religious symbols or anything of the sort at all in my apartment, it was all achieved through color, design, and my own sense of mind.
Perhaps you do not need to decorate, or change any design of your home, except for the attitudes in your home. The people in your home are more important than the belongings in your home. Perhaps keeping a gratitude journal to be reminded of what is most important and meaningful is one step on that path.
There are plenty of to-do’s on my list for our home. Although our home is “finished” as far as interior decorating, it has been the same for 10 years, so I’m itching for a change. Our backyard is in desperate need of a makeover, deck and all. Our front yard landscaping just rubs me the wrong way. Right now, at this very minute, I personally have clutter in the living room, dining room, office, and my scraproom. Something needs to be addressed, as clutter in a room signals clutter in the brain. I’m one of those people that suffers from “I Can’t Have Anyone Over” syndrome because of the clutter most of the time. I do not want to be one of those people.
Despite all that, I am working hard on my marriage of approximately 8 years, continuing to communicate always. I am working on my gratitude journal. I am working on being pleasant to be with, for my husband, especially since we both work from home and are together 24/7.
Overall, I want our home to be comfortable and for our family and friends to feel welcomed, loved, and happy!
What do you want for your family and friends in your home?

My Vision for 2012: Dream Prompt #4
What are the obstacles to overcome, and/or tough questions that you need to ask yourself about your dream(s) for your life?
Create an art journal page answering this question, include at least a paragraph of journaling.
Happy Saturday friends! I‘m excited to see pages in the gallery based on these prompts. I posted a thread in the Art Journal Caravan 2012 forum highlighting your pages, feel free to add your new pages!
Confession Time
I have a confession to make. I am not perfect!
What?!!!! Yes, it’s true. I am not perfect. It’s awful. It’s embarrassing. I have a terrible memory. I’m disorganized. I guess the two go hand-in-hand. It’s very inconvenient and inefficient. I hate it, especially when it interferes with my work here on this blog.
Yes, it’s caused me to even make mistakes on this blog. I have this awesome, wonderful, lovely, friendly, talented, beautiful team that Tangie lets me ask to create pages for my prompts, and for the ones that agree, I have forgotten at least once to post their page.
Rarely it’s a matter of communication, but usually it’s my disorganization, faulty memory, rush, fatigue, etc., – my fault. And yet, they forgive me. I feel so blessed.
The latest survivor is Valentina aka zotova, as I left off her page from last week’s My Vision for 2012: Dream Prompt #3. Valentina went on to post her page in not 1, not 2, not 3 – but 11 galleries! Furthermore, her page was noted in three GSO: Gallery Standouts; GSO at DST; GS at Me So Scrappy. Congrats Valentina!!! You rock!
Here is her page for last week’s My Vision 2012: Dream Prompt #3 What is your #1 passion? Please leave her praise in the comments!

What obstacles do you need to overcome to make your dreams come to life?
My confession served a purpose after all, it identified a couple of obstacles that pop up over and over…and I can add a few more stumbling blocks to the list, in addition to faulty memory, distractions, and disorganization – I also suffer procrastination, lack of focus, and fear.

My Vision for 2012: Dream Prompt #3
“My life’s #1 purpose and passion is….” Create an art journal page finishing this sentence, include at least a paragraph of journaling.
The prompt this week can be inspired from our work last week, digging a bit deeper into our #1 purpose and passion. If you made a list of your top five passions, which of those holds the most meaning for you? Not only that, which one can be a lifelong, worthy purpose that will never have a completion date?
For me, my #1 purpose and passion is my marriage. Sure, I could have said, “Outside my marriage, my #1 passion is my art,” or something similar, however that would not be giving my marriage the respect that I feel it deserves. Since I am unable to be a mother, being a wife is the most important job I have, and we all know marriage isn’t easy. For right now, I believe my marriage is my #1 purpose. It kind of surprised me to come to this conclusion, as I did think art or something else ambitious would top the list…yet I do put a lot of time into making this relationship work. It’s a little scary to admit that my marriage is my #1 purpose, not sure why, maybe because I haven’t heard it very often in my corner of the world. Yet I was really thrilled to make a page with my marriage as my focus, and excited to show my spouse when it was finished.

My Vision for 2012: Dream – Prompt #2
My Vision for 2012: Dream – Prompt #2

Create an art journal page based on the quotation, “Live the life you’ve imagined” – include at least a paragraph of journaling.
Upload the page to your favorite gallery and link up the url here in the comments!
Scroll down to see my Inspiration Page!
I love this quotation. I like it because it says “Wake up! Get off that sofa! Turn off that T.V. Get away from the computer, Ipad, or Iphone! Just do it!” It acknowledges that I’ve been a dreamer, and now is the time to make good. It says, “Yes, believe in yourself. Why not?” Isn’t that so awesome?
Just what have I been imagining for myself? I wrote down my top 12 dreams for my have-it-all, quintessential existence. (I narrowed down the top 5 for my page below.) These fantasies evolved around what would my lifestyle look like if it were tailored made for me, and included: enjoying creating the most beautiful digital, hybrid, and handmade scrapbooks; having fun adventures as a world traveler; enjoying the journey of art journaling; enjoying excellent health with lots of energy, vitality, stamina; enjoying a loving, committed, solid, fun marriage; living in a gorgeous, well-designed home with gardens; having lots of free time to be; enjoying life with abundance; knowing peace and joyfulness; practicing mediation and yoga consistently; being the most loving, involved Aunt; & being charismatic, well-liked, and respected for being me. (The top 5 are in bold.)
For as long as I remember, I have had the goal of self-actualization. To self-actualize is to fulfill one’s potential. Actually, in all honesty, somehow I left a huge goal, perhaps my #1 goal of all-time off this list for some reason. Oh, I know why…because it’s a goal, and not a lifestyle choice. My #1 goal is to write and publish a book. I don’t have the wish to live the way of life of book tours, public speaking engagements, and travel obligations that some authors live though. That would interfere with my desire to have as much free time as possible. So I left my goals off my list for this week….goals are for another list…as they don’t quite fit this quotation – Live the life you’ve imagined. The full quote is from Walden by Henry David Thoreau,
“I learned this, at least, by my experiment: that if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours.”
How do you want to live your life? Do you understand the difference between achievements and style of living? You can infuse both your ambitions and habits with purpose, if it gives more meaning to the process. You may also have a goal that is influenced by a talent you’ve developed. However, do not confuse talent with Purpose, as was recently spoken by T.D. Jakes, a famous preacher, on Oprah’s Lifeclass The Tour Interactive Event.
Ivana Kvesic writes for The Christian Post, “Half the battle is not spending your life to be what you aren’t,” he said, before sharing with the audience that the key to fulfilling their purpose is to find passion.
“It is your passion that empowers you to be able to do that thing you were created to do,” Jakes said.” Read more about this at Bishop TD Jakes Talks ‘Living With Purpose’ on ‘Oprah’s Lifeclass‘. Visit Oprah’s Lifeclass online.

New Theme for April -My Vision for 2012: Dreams – Prompt #1
New Theme for April -My Vision for 2012: Dreams – Prompt #1
What is your payback for dreaming? How does the energy of dreaming make you feel?
What are your dreams and your passions? Let’s take a look at these during the month of April.
There are two main kinds of dreams: those when you are sleeping, and those when you are awake. Sometimes, if one is lucky, when one is sleeping, a dream will occur that will be inspiration for a real life project or idea. My husband, a musician and song-writer, often will dream of a song, wake up, remember the song, and immediately write down the lyrics or record the music as he knows he will never ever remember it if he goes back to sleep. I tend to think of this prompt, though, as dealing with our awake dreams and/or daydreams, however feel free to interpret it however you like. If the topic of “sleeping dreams” is your thing, go for it!
New Theme for April Introduction
dream
[dreem] noun, verb, dreamed or dreamt, dream·ing, adjective
noun
1. a succession of images, thoughts, or emotions passing through the mind during sleep.
2. the sleeping state in which this occurs.
3. an object seen in a dream.
4. an involuntary vision occurring to a person when awake.
5. a vision voluntarily indulged in while awake; daydream; reverie.
6. an aspiration; goal; aim: A trip to Europe is his dream.
7. a wild or vain fancy.
8. something of an unreal beauty, charm, or excellence.
9. to have a dream.
10. to indulge in daydreams or reveries: He dreamed about vacation plans when he should have been working.
11. to think or conceive of something in a very remote way (usually followed by of ): I wouldn’t dream of asking them.

Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world. Harriet Tubman
All men dream but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes to make it possible. T.E. Lawrence
You cannot dream yourself into a character: you must hammer and forge yourself into one. Henry D. Thoreau
The question for each man to settle is not what he would do if he had means, time, influence and educational advantages; the question is what he will do with the things he has. The moment a young man ceases to dream or to bemoan his lack of opportunities and resolutely looks his conditions in the face, and resolves to change them, he lays the corner-stone of a solid and honorable success. Inspiration for April – My Vision for 2012: Dreams – Prompt #1

Journaling: The payback for dreaming for me is knowing myself. Clarity. Being fully aware of knowing I’m on the right path to my authentic self is what I get out of knowing what I really want out of life. There is a synery and electricity from dreaming that is fresh and life-affirming.

What is your payback for dreaming? How does the energy of dreaming make you feel?
My different hobbies, art journaling and scrapbooking, crocheting, quilting – they are all me, daydreaming out loud. I don’t think daydreaming is pointless or a waste of time. I think it is a great way to pull my mind out of the constant madness of trying to solve what sometimes seem like unsolvable problems. On the surface, it’s a nice break for my aching head, and I might come out of it with something tangible, like a new page to display or a few more rows on my Dr. Who scarf. But it also flips on that extra light bulb, allowing me to approach the issue afresh (and it’s so much different, approaching a problem rather than having it chase you down and beat you senseless!). I can be creative, even ridiculous, as I try to come up with — yes, imagine! — a solution.

Jordan Lejuwaan writes at High Existence.com,
“Studies have shown that people who are inspired are happier, nicer, productive and will not stray away from their chosen path if life gets difficult.
So print a quote and tape it to the mirror. Have an inspirational video as your starting page. Use an inspirational mantra for meditation. Get a principle to live by. In short, get your dose of inspiration each day!”
What do I do after I have my mantra?
Peaceful Meditation free creative commons by Pink Sherbert Photography, on Flickr
Besides creating your art journal page, I highly suggest trying out meditation with your new mantra. There are different types of meditation, and Transcendental Meditation – click the link for instructions – “TM is the only meditation method that has over five hundred independent scientific studies shore up its claims. The studies were done at over two hundred independent universities as well as research institutes in thirty three countries regarding different benefits of TM technique; the results were published in over one hundred respected scientific journals,” according to Tony at Natural Healing for All. He continues:
- “A meta-analysis in 1989 that was published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology compared one hundred and forty six independent studies on the effect that different relaxation and meditation techniques in lowering trait anxiety.”
- “TM was found to make a larger difference than other types of relaxation and meditation in reducing trait anxiety.”
- “A study that was published in the Japanese Journal of Industrial Health in 1990, done at Sumitomo Heavy Industries by the Japanese Ministry of Labour , researched transcendental meditation as well as its effect on industrial workers and mental health. In this study four hundred and forty employees learned TM. Three hundred twenty one workers served as controls. After five months, the researchers found considerable reductions in anxiety, impulsiveness, major physical complaints and emotional instability in the meditators in comparison to the controls.”
- “These meditators also had considerable decreases in depression, digestive problems, and tendencies towards smoking, insomnia and psychosomatic disease.”
I recently watched Oprah’s Next Chapter where she visits The Most Unusual Town in Iowa. People interested in Transcendental Meditation move to this town in order to have support, and live in a community of like-minded individuals. Oprah practices TM herself, and paid to have her whole staff learn the practice this summer, and she claims that everyone in the office is getting along better, among other benefits. The benefit that I keep hearing about that stands out to me is that people who practice TM no longer experience migraines!!!

About Our Prompt #3
Have you ever made a vision board? How about a vision board related specifically to creativity? A vision board is where you focus on what you want for your life, your goals…and then create any kind of board with symbols and images that represent those goals. The board could be a poster board with images cut from magazines, or it could be a digital board that you create with your photo editing software and your photos, or perhaps on Pinterest.com.
Ideally, it is something that you want to look at daily to give you concentration and clarity for the plan for your life, or in this matter, your creative life.
What areas of creativity need attention and guidance in your life? For instance, besides art journaling and scrapbooking, the artistic subjects that I am interested in include: crocheting, gardening, healthy cooking, fashion, gift-giving, photography, decorating, crafts for my little nephews, etc. I could create a vision board for all or for each of these areas. In fact, I began with gardening…since that is sorely neglected at my home. You can see my page below.

Right now we rent a teeny house that’s about >>this big<< and there’s absolutely no space at all for creative work and art supplies (which is a big part of why I’m 100% digital). But we’re looking to buy a home in the next year, so I’m praying there will be a corner where I can spread out and get my hands dirty again. The photos here are from my Pinterest board of Creative Studio Daydreams.

Prompt #2
What does your muse look like?
Journal your thoughts.

I was at a paper scrapbooking crop last week when I was talking about art journaling, and the girl at the table in front of me asked, “What is art journaling?” Now, I assume people find this blog and our art journaling posts here who are discovering art journaling for the first time because we are on the World Wide Web, yet here was someone right in front of my nose who had never ever heard of art journaling before. So I explained it to her, and then afterwards, I was thinking…what else could have I have said to her to explain why I art journal in addition to scrapbooking?
Then I saw this quotation by the famous writer May Sarton, “I have written novels to find out what I thought about something, and poems to find out what I felt about something.”
That sums it up for me. I liken art journaling as the poetry of the scrapbooking world. Speaking of poets, one of the definitions for a muse is a poet. Let this be the segway for our Prompt this week…
About Our Prompt #2
Muse (my
z)
n.
2. muse
- There is a great article about how the muse appears in literature and music throughout the world at Love & Longing: The World Of Poets and Muses by Robin Frederick.
- This survey at Writing101 has questions to help you describe your muse, such as Is your muse plain, colorful, with designs? Arms, legs, wings, how many eyes? See more here.
- Blogger Emmie Mears has an entertaining description of her muse here, also quoting how Stephen King describes his muse.

My muse is in water because she’s beckoning me to be more fluid in following my instincts, and also because water is life and it just feels nourishing to me here. There’s a hint of a jellyfish back there, because when you don’t follow your spiritual and creative instincts, it really stings. I do believe the muse, or instinct, or discernment, is a spiritual quality that we all possess and choose whether or not to follow, in our creativity and in life choices. Sometimes I trust it implicitly, and other times I second-guess it to death, but hopefully I’m learning to swim more often with the current of wisdom and inspiration instead of against it.
“Intuition is a spiritual faculty and does not explain, but simply points the way.” ~Florence Scovel Shinn

Journaling: My muse if funny, witty and beautiful. She inspired me to create the most unusual things and through those things her true beauty is explored. She shines through my work like a piece of beach glass reflecting in the sun. She is random and sporadic, she comes and goes as she pleases. She keeps me on my toes and I’m always ready to receive her inspiration.

My muse has flowers in her hair, she has wings, and she is beautiful. She is bold, wild, and inspired by life. I was told when I was in elementary school by a teacher that in order to remain creative, that I would have to hold on to my inner child’s creativity…not to ever let it go…so I have the child in the background as well.
