Alice says “There is no truth in this mirror”, but to me, this represents the truths about ourselves that we all sometimes pretend not to see.

Sharon gets creative with the background paper by adding a border. She added glitter to the H.W. Osgood ephemera, and extracted the skull. She also used the spider in various sizes, as well as the stamp in various sizes.

Like Sharon, sbpoet also extracted  the skull and uses it as a stamp. She uses the round stamp as an extra large element, and I love how she just shows the background paper’s border.

I used the free ephemera for my Halloween Art Journal Day 15 with the quote provided in the Tangie’s Workshop, I thought it worked perfect with the skull! I found a Halloween font online and used Tangie’s Paperworn Art Styles with the text and the skull paper too. I added some splats, collage fodder house, and the circle with the number.

I’ve been wanting to make my own white and black pumpkins for a few weeks now, so I finally bought a few craft pumpkins and got down to business. I have to admit it’s been a few years since I have bought a pumpkin at Halloween, and last year, I didn’t even decorate for Halloween. We don’t have kids, and we didn’t host a Halloween party last year, so I didn’t see the point in decorating. This year, I’ve been looking at Halloween decor on Pinterest for weeks now, and  I couldn’t wait to decorate! That’s where I saw many ideas for black and white pumpkins. I’ll  share my step-by-step instructions for how I used Tangie’s products to create my designer pumpkin!

INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1. Gather your supplies: I used white and black acrylic paint, foam paint brushes, fine tipped paint brushes, Sharpie or similar marker, scissors, an adhesive, pencil, pins, and of course, pumpkins. Also aluminum foil.

Step 2. Cover the stems with aluminum foil so that when you paint the pumpkin, you will not get paint on the stem.

Step 3. Paint the pumpkins white. Apply several coats if necessary depending on taste. On one of the small pumpkins, I used my black Copic marker (or your can use a Sharpie…I love how the Copic writes smoothly over paint) to draw a chevron pattern. For the sake of time, I freehand drew the chevron pattern, however if I were to do it again, I would have printed out Tangie’s chevron pattern and traced it more carefully.

Step 4. Use the marker to fill in the edges of the chevron outline.

Step 5. Fill in the chevron stripes by painting them in with black acrylic paint. This pumpkin is finished!

Step 6. Move over to your computer and in your photo-editing software, open a silhouette from Tangie’s Silhouette Collab with Molly DeCrow. Open a witch’s hat from Alice’s Curiously Spooky Night in the Anniversary Grab Bag. I flipped the hat so it was facing the right way, and placed it on the silhouette’s head. I measured the pumpkin to see how big I needed the silhouette to be, and made it such size on a 8.5″ x 11″ document. I also added Hand Cut Collage Fodder: Houses 3 {Halloween} to print out on the same document for my art journal.

Step 7. Cut out the silhouette from the paper.

Step 8. Pin silhouette onto pumpkin. (I saw this trick on another tutorial, and I don’t remember where…I’ll add the source as soon as I find it.)

Step 9. Trace around silhouette and remove paper.

Step 10. Paint in silhouette with black acrylic paint.  I used a heat gun to dry the silhouette to save time. I also used another stencil to create a frame around the witch silhouette. Part of that frame includes an oval drawn in pencil.

Step 11. Follow the line of the pencil with glue (I used Fabri-Tac, as I love how it holds bulky things).  Take vintage beads and place into glue. This pumpkin is finished!

Happy October 1st! If you are like me, Halloween is one of your favorite months. Halloween is all of autumn and your favorite nostalgic memories rolled into one. Halloween is cooler temperatures. Halloween is little kids’ picking out fantasy costumes. Halloween is busy mothers’ sewing said costumes. Halloween is Reeses’ and Hershey’s and my husband’s favorite: Mary Janes candies, a vintage peanut butter type of taffy. Halloween is black cats. Halloween is spooky stories. Halloween is bobbing for apples. Halloween is whimsical outdoor decorations, and indoor decorations too. Halloween is walking for miles on Halloween night from neighbor to neighbor with Dad. Halloween is saying “Trick or Treat.” Halloween is having enough candy until Easter.

Now we can express our love for Halloween in one of our favorite ways, with an art journal! I’m going to make mine into a hybrid board book. That is, once my husband finishes downloading all the drivers for the printer after he recently re-formatted our computer…just telling me last night at 9 p.m.  I was hoping to at least how you my cover, but that will have to wait til next week. In the meantime, I can share with you my first nine pages!!!! Of course, I’m talking about Tangie’s {Studio Box Workshops No. 2}

Tutorial Peek Preview

Today I’m going to share with you a fun tutorial for a Halloween Decoration using Tangie’s Collage Printable from the Midnight Mischief Collab with Sherrie JD.  First of all, I was inspired by all of the black and white Halloween decorations that I have seen on Pinterest. For instance, this blinged pumpkin, this fun sentiment, this Halloween vignette,  these details,  and these stenciled pumpkins.

TUTORIAL

Step 1. The first step is to take these Leaf Shapes from Say It With Letters.com and trace them upside down on felt. Do not adhere yet.

Step 2. Embroider

Step 2. Next, embroider with french knots and additional stitches. Adhere to leaves.

Step 3. Print Collage.

Step 3. Print Tangie’s Collage from Midnight Mischief. I printed it onto matte photo paper for my inkjet printer.

Step 4. Adhere Tinsel Ribbon to Bottle Cap.

Step 4. Adhere Tinsel Ribbon (My Mind’s Eye) to a recycled bottle cap.

Step 5. Trace Bottle Cap and Cut Out Collage Girl.

Step 5. I put the bottle cap on the collage girl, and traced around it, then cut out the collage girl. She fit into the bottle cap perfectly. Adhere. (also see photo below)

Step 7. Repeat Bottle Cap for Second Collage Image and Finish

Step 7. Take second bottle cap, and trace around boy image on collage sheet. Cut out and insert into bottle cap. Adhere. Take tinsel ribbon and adhere to outside of bottle cap.

Step 8. Take clothespin, and trace around on zebra border. Cut out and adhere to clothespin.

Step 9. Cut out tag with moon from collage sheet. Adhere to middle-sized leaf with a feather underneath it. Add trim. Adhere bottle cap.

Step 10. Take chipboard frame with a feather, and set on small leaf. Use trim to wrap around leaf and tie in knot. Adhere decorative button.

Step 11. Layer doily, vintage bingo card (or print one from one of Tangie’s kits!), chipboard frame, feather, trim, and bottle cap. Adhere all to leaf.

Step 12. Add clothespin to doily and bingo card for finishing touch!

If I could do anything for an afternoon, I would most likely spend it thrifting through a flea market! Lucky for me, Tangie has asked me to share photos of flea market finds. You can find my previous Flea Market Finds post here.

I’m not quite sure exactly what the allure is, perhaps it’s the curiosity, the draw of an amazing deal…the possibility of a one-of-a-kind item. I love vintage styles, and that’s the kind of thing that I look for. I am also intrigued by items that have been upcycled – given a second life and re-purposed.

According to Fleamarketqueen.com, “flea markets originated in the Middle East where they were known as outside markets.” The first flea market, as we know it, took place in Paris in 1885 called Le Marche aux puces de Saint-Ouen.  “marche aux puces” literally translates to “flea market.” (Read more: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Where_did_the_name_Flea_Market_come_from#ixzz1XVrC8N2b)

This flea market is the most famous one in Paris and is still in operation with over 2000 shops according to this website. “Visiting to some stalls in this flea market is as if visiting a museum,” writes the author of gisparis.com/paris_shopping/flea_market.htm.

The term “flea market” didn’t begin popping up with any real frequency until the 1950s. At that time, it was usually used to refer to markets of this type in Paris, Spain and elsewhere in Europe. Saturdays Are Fun: The Chevron Trend

One of the current design trends is the Chevron pattern. It is an inverted V, like a wave with the hard pointed edge.  It is interesting to know of the history of the design that “the chevron occurs in early art including designs on pottery and rock carvings. Examples can be found approximately 1800 BC in archaeological recovery of pottery designs from the palace of Knossos on Crete in the modern day country of Greece.^[1]” (via Wikipedia)

Chevron is often referred to as herringbone, however the two are different designs.

Here you can see the chevron waves above.

Below you can see the difference in the herringbone pattern. Notice how the diagonal pattern blocks merge and lock together.

For the Love of Color! I do love color. You won’t see very many monochromatic scrapbook or art journal pages in my gallery. There is nothing wrong with monochromatic pages, in fact, I think they are beautiful, but I just never know how to stop adding color!

Saturdays are fun for shopping for clothes.  After all, shopping increases endorphins. And since Fall is fast approaching, with crisp Autumn days, and chillier temperatures,   it’s time to update our wardrobe. So let’s look at the new trend fashion trends popping up on the internet, maybe you’ll find something  to add to your closet. Clothing trends often influences graphic trends and vice versa.  First, let’s look at color:

We’ve often seen the Pantone Color Report for each season.  This year’s report has jewel tones mixed with peaceful, serene beachy neutrals. Yet here is an interesting chart below, a breakdown on how the designers actually used the colors, and which are the favorites, with Deep Teal (19-4914) a favorite for Women’s Fall Fashions and Cedar (16-9526)  for Men in 2011. A surprise, for me, is Raspberry at #5 for Men.

First to jump off the Pantone Color Chart is coral, aka Emberglow (Pantone 17-1547). What a fresh and lovely hue!

Will coral + gray be the new yellow + gray this fall? I love it!

Love the heels!

Mustard aka Bamboo (Pantone 14-0740) is striking against blue.

Missoni for Target Until September 12th! Lots of vibrant fall color! Great chevron pattern.
